I ride with worry of a texting fool coming up behind me all the time! Ugh.

Distracted Driving

I’ve been thinking about distracted driving quite a bit this week. Distracted by it, actually.

Last night while taking a walk in my neighborhood, I was surprised how fast the traffic was moving and how nerve-wracking it felt to have the cars so close to the sidewalk. Then, I witnessed a driver looking at her GPS while speeding towards the stop light. Failing to see that the road curved, she ran up onto the curb, narrowly missing a tree. She was lucky to walk away with just a broken axle on her car.

Distracted driving is becoming one of the biggest dangers on the road and cyclists often tell me how they worry about being a victim of a texting motorist. US Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood has been actively promoting safety initiatives to get drivers to focus on the road. Thought I’d share a video published on his blog from BMW’s summer campaign.

Within Austin it is illegal to text while your car is in motion. It will take more time before it is eventually outlawed everywhere. In the meantime, we can all put our phones away when we get in the car. Change begins with each of us.
